The story of Hunker began here, since then Hunker has become a male AND gotten a girlfriend. So here's what happened...Hunker is a zebra finch that will not fly. I thought it was a female, but since I orginally wrote about the amazing walking finch the cheek feathers have come in and they're as bright and round and orange as any minature baboon's ass. They serve the same purpose I'm sure. Attract the attention of the opposite sex. Go ahead men, really look at your genitals during arousal some time - what? You have, countless times? Oh, well then you know what I'm talking about.I was worried that Hunker's inability to fly - whether mental or physical - would lead to a failure to thrive since he was unable to enjoy the company of the flock sitting above him. I decided I would manipulate his environment so that it would become possibly more appealling to his fellow finches. I put a perch 1/2 an inch up from the bottom of the cage where Hunker spent his time walking around. It wasn't that the other birds spent alot of time FLYING, it was just that they sat on a perch that you had to fly to reach. Now Hunker had a perch too. What next? A nest. I bought him a nest and hung it next to his ground level perch and filled it with cotton. I CLAPPED HAPPY when I saw Hunker sitting on the perch like a fully functional finch for the first time. Then I waited to see if the other birds would be drawn to the new ground floor style of living. WELL SLAP MY ASS AND CALL ME SUSY! He attracted a female finch! This female was hatched slightly after he was. I call her Molting Beauty. I don't know what her problem is, but she looks like she's constantly in a state of loosing her feathers. But she sits on the bottom of the cage, on the perch that requires a mere hop, not a soar, and cuddles with Hunker the phobic. Darwin might be appalled. I am waiting for the arrival of bald, wingless finches as Hunker and Molting Beauty give in to the primary directive and become fruitful and multiple. Zebra Finch Nuggets.
