(Written June 5th, 2007)Do you know what the sound of 18 cupcakes with an inch of frosting on top of each of them makes when it hits the ground? *PLOOMBSH*Then dead silence. My granddaughter's fourth birthday party was today. She had a beautiful cupcake cake, thick with frosting and dancing princess figurines. The last echoes of the traditional HAPPY BIRTHDAY begun in one key, merging up and down through about five other keys, and ending on an enthusiastic minor flat was still lingering on the air with the waxy smoky smell of four pink and white candles just blown out. Gravity is the law and it took charge of the dessert. (ploombsh). My gorgeous daughter handled it very well. She got a spatula out, slopped the frosting back on to a plate, picked up the cupcakes, and I told her that THIS would be the birthday that would make it in to family legend. It was a bonus, not a bane. Too bad it wasn't caught on video tape. It would have won the 10k from America's Funniest Home Videos. Then it rained. A pinata was on the list of entertainment for the kids. But with the rain, was hanging it from a tree outside out of the question? My son-in-law said we could just lay it on the living room floor and use the bat on it. Instead of a pinata it would be a "Rodney Kingata". We all stood in the rain. Another addition to the legendary birthday party. My oldest son gave me a stomach ache making me laugh with his impression of a lazy eyed lawyer. He was looking straight at me with one eye, and towards the left with his other and he demanded to know if this was the person seen at the scene of the crime. Nobody knew exactly which person he was addressing. It was so funny because there is a commercial on TV with just such a lazy eyed lawyer offering services to either the person watching, or the one thats off in the kitchen - you just never know.My youngest daughter was a little blue around the edges because B.E.T. boy (her latest month long practice boyfriend) called her this morning before we left for the birthday party and told her that his mother said he couldn't be her boyfriend anymore. She reacted the way I've seen many people of different levels of melanin saturation react when dealing with problems with each other - she said she thought she was a victim of prejudice. I took the opportunity to expand her ability to perceive possible causation. The more options your mind offers for any given issue, the bigger your world is. I want my daughter to have access to the solar system. I told her I thought it was more likely that his mother thought he was too young to have a "girlfriend", especially since they were getting along so well and it was lasting longer than the practice month of most 5th grader crushes. I told her to just remember that he liked her, and she liked him, and they could be good friends and that was the best thing to be in the world anyway. I didn't think her paleness had anything at all to do with the situation. She thinks she may cry when he talks to her in school - and she might. More life practice.I missed the democratic debate tonight. I had a headache from the stress of driving home in the pouring rain with windshield wipers that would randomly stop working. I came home and went to bed. Life is like my drive home. Sometimes seen so clearly, and other times a blurry mystery. I know a few things for sure. I love my family.
