"Huh?" The bobble-headed me said."I can give you a salt shaker and you can play with that..." The bartender said as the bar filled with a trickle of my people. They were all there earlier. Vampires, Devils, Evil Kneivel, The Burger King, Cheech and Chong, the Jeepers Creepers demon, a few drunks, black t-shirts "Madness Reigns", tattoos, huge backs - some of them with the pressure of my fingernails still lingering. Defensive only, of course. There's nothing else to do but stick your claws out when the chaos spills outside it's circle of power. It was Devil's Night in Detroit. The panhandlers were gathered at the street corners and my ears were full of a satisfied ringing.I spent the night with my hands in the air in combinations of fist, middle finger, and horns. When the vibration of the drums tickled the bottom of my feet, and the power of the bass made the center of my chest throb I started to smile. When I got a flailing forearm across my cheekbone as a mosh pit broke free I smiled. When an exhausted pit devotee dropped to his knees beside me I laid my hand on his shoulder and comforted him. I understood the weariness of being shoved from side to side and back and forth and having nothing left to do but stand on your feet and ride the motion. But thats another story. Blood Simple, Otep, and HellYeah entertained me on my birthday. I'd never heard Otep before and it turns out I am a fan. I even bought the CD that was released just last night, and the T-shirt. The lead singer of Otep knows the secret of the Hat Dance. There she was, song after song, sliding on a new aspect. A black net to look though, a ghostly veil to shriek through, feathers and velvet to entice with. And she could scream. The lyrics to the songs were the codes I comprehend. Blood Simple was good, but they need to work on getting the levels of vocals loud enough to be heard over the rest of the band. HellYeah is full of excellence gathered from Pantera, Mudvayne, and Damage Plan, melded into a new beast that's bluesy, metal, and fun to watch.Back to the middle of the life pit, keeping my balance with a stagger, sway and a trip. Its good to have a soundtrack for the journey.
